Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a parent or guardian who is a current or retired member of a union affiliated with the International Union of Police Associations. Children of retired members are considered only if those members are per capita paying members in good standing.
  4. Must pursue a career in law enforcement, labor relations, or a related field at an accredited university or college.
  5. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 'B' (3.0) or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for current high school seniors who have a parent or guardian that is a member of a union affiliated with the International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be accepted in a course of study in law enforcement, labor relations or a related field at an accredited university or college.

Application requirements for the Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript
  • SAT or ACT scores
Additional Information: The applicants's parent or guardian must be a member of a union affiliated with the International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO (IUPA) website under the 'Member Benefits' heading. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a letter of recommendation from a teacher and/or counselor; an official transcript; and an official copy of his/her SAT or ACT score report. The completed application and supporting materials must be postmarked by the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
