Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, nine awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must major in religion or theology.
  4. Must be of African American, Hispanic, Asian, or First Nation heritage.
  5. Must be enrolled in a Ph.D. or Th.D. program and currently working on his/her dissertation.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. graduate students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. or Th.D. program and preparing a dissertation. Students must be of African American, Hispanic, Asian, or First Nation heritage.

Additional Information: Please note: Students enrolled in Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) programs are ineligible for this fellowship.

Award Amount: Up to $20,000 annually, non-renewable. In addition, the recipient's institution must provide a full-tuition scholarship or remission as a condition of the award. Expenses for attendance at the FTE Doctoral Conference are included as part of the fellowship award. Fellows also receive a travel stipend to attend the annual meetings of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature, as well as other professional development opportunities.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications are available on the Fund for Theological Education (FTE) website by clicking the provided link. In addition to a completed online application form, each student must submit the following: an essay addressing the three areas listed on the application; a curriculum vitae; a one-page abstract of his/her dissertation; a list of dissertation adviser and committee members; current official graduate transcripts (may be mailed separately); an academic form; two letters of reference (may be mailed separately); a completed budget statement form; documentation from his/her school showing amount of financial award to be received; and his/her dissertation prospectus of ten pages or less and bibliography. Students should review the application for specific details and instructions on each application component. Materials received after the deadline date will not be considered. To assist the FTE in the processing of each application, the student should type his/her application. The student should make sure that his/her name appears on all materials submitted on his/her behalf. Students should not staple any of the pages or supporting documents. Faxed and emailed materials will not be accepted.
