Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any give year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must major in ecological restoration.
  3. Must be enrolled in a graduate program at time of application.
  4. Must be attending a university in the U.S.

Description: This grant is available to support specialized graduate study in ecological restoration at an accredited university in the United States.

Application requirements for the GCA Fellowship in Ecological Restoration are:

Additional Information: The fellowship supports specialized graduate study and research in ecological restoration, the active healing of the land. Its goal is to support research that will advance knowledge and increase the number of scientists in this important field. It is awarded annually to exceptional graduate students to assist with study and research. Selection criteria will include the degree to which the proposed fellowship work addresses the objectives of the GCA, as well as the excellence of the student's academic qualifications and person. Applicants are encouraged to consider the SER International Primer on Ecological Restoration available online. Award selection will be completed in March. Inquiries should not be sent before to April 1.

Award Amount: $8,000 annually, renewable for one additional year pending review by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Application information is available on the Garden Club of America (GCA) website. To apply, the student must submit the following: a one-page cover letter, including the applicant's name, email address and telephone number, the name of his/her university and department, title of research, and his/her academic advisor's name and title; a written proposal for a research project (not to exceed five pages including literature cited, tables, figures, etc); a one-page budget for the proposed research; and a current resume no longer than two pages. The four documents must be sent as a single PDF attachment to the email address provided. The subject line must read "GCA fellowship application." In addition, the applicant must submit a letter of endorsement from his/her graduate faculty advisor verifying enrollment, and one additional recommendation. The applicant is to instruct his/her recommenders to submit their letters of recommendation personally. The recommenders must submit them as an email attachment or in the body of an email with the subject "GCA letter for" followed by the applicant's name. All application materials, including letters of recommendation, must be received by the deadline date.
