In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must attend an ABA-accredited law school in the United States.
  3. Must be a current law student at time of application.

Description: This legal writing contest is open to students studying at any ABA-accredited law school in the United States. The Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) sponsors this competition to encourage law students interested in the areas of law that affect foods, drugs, devices, cosmetics, and biotechnology.

Application requirements for the H. Thomas Austern Memorial Writing Award are:

  • Essay
  • Cover sheet
Additional Information: Separate committees of practicing attorneys with relevant expertise will judge the papers in each competition. The following factors will be considered: thoroughness and depth of legal analysis; originality and difficulty of topic; evaluation of judicial precedents, statutes, and regulations; discussion of conclusions and future impact; quality of legal research; writing style; form and quality of citations; and conformity with the rules of the competition. Winning papers will be considered for publication in the 'Food and Drug Law Journal'.

Award Amount: One first-place award of $750, one second-place award of $500, and one third-place award of $250 will be awarded. All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

This is a legal writing contest. Additional information is available online from the Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI). Papers should provide an in-depth analysis of a current legal issue relevant to the regulation of foods, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and biologics. The FDLI welcomes the submission of papers prepared for course work, but entrants must pay attention to competition details and edit such papers accordingly. Students should access the FDLI website for suggestions of suitable topics and further information. Submissions shall be submitted using the online portal. Papers must not exceed 100 double spaced pages. Papers shall include footnotes, not endnotes. Text and footnote type shall be in 12-pt. Times Roman font. No personal identifiers should appear in the paper itself. All entries must be received by FDLI by the deadline date. Papers must be sent in 'Word' document format.
