Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually. A second place winner may be named if deemed appropriate. The second place winner will be published in "The Health Lawyer" but will not receive a cash or travel award.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a law student to apply for this award.
  3. Must be enrolled at least part time.
  4. Must be attending an ABA-accredited law school in the U.S.

Application requirements for the Health Law Student Writing Competition are:

Additional Information: The current Law Student Liaison will be excluded from entering the competition.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable. The winner will also receive airfare, hotel accommodations for two nights, and a $50 per diem for two days to attend the Emerging Issues Conference.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $600.

This is an essay contest. The essay must be 20 to 35 pages in length, double-spaced, and written in the Harvard 'Blue Book' style. The subject for this year's competition is 'Emerging Issues in Health Care' and the essay should be a practical examination of issues related to the topic of the student's choosing. To enter the contest, the student must be nominated in one of the following ways: by a member of the health law section; self-nomination; a faculty member at any ABA-accredited law school; or by a member of the American Association of Law Schools. No nomination will be considered unless the nominator addresses the following points in writing: whether the nominated paper meets substantive criteria set by the committee; whether the award, if given, would further the purposes of the health law program; and special requests or information regarding presentation of the award. Each nominator must provide a copy of his/her curriculum vita/resume and a statement from the nominee detailing his/her interests in health law, current involvement in the field, and goals/objectives within the field. One copy of the paper must be postmarked or sent via email by 12 p.m. CST on the deadline date.
