Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 180 fellowships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a full-time student.
  3. Must have a clearly demonstrated research interest in the intellectual and institutional foundations of a free society.
  4. Must be an undergraduate junior or senior or a graduate student (prior to completion of Ph.D.) in the current academic year. Law students, MBA students, and other professional program students are also eligible.

Description: The Humane Studies Fellowship is available for international and U.S. students who will be college juniors or seniors or graduate students in the upcoming academic year. Students must have a clearly demonstrated research interest in the intellectual and institutional foundations of a free society.

Additional Information: Awards are based on: academic or professional performance; relevance of one's work to the advancement of a free society; and the potential for success. All qualified men and women will be considered for Humane Studies Fellowships without regard to race, religion, national or ethnic origin, citizenship, or handicap. Although IHS considers applications from outside the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, fellowships are generally awarded to applicants who live, or are studying, in those countries. Fellowship awards will be announced in early April.

Award Amount: Up to $15,000 annually, non-renewable. Awards typically range from $2,000 to $15,000 annually. Amounts awarded take into account the cost of tuition at the recipient's institution and any other funds received. Students may reapply if they are eligible for subsequent programs.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,500.

Online applications are available on the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) website. The online application requires a short registration process and allows online document uploads of all supporting materials. In addition to the completed application, the applicant must submit the following: transcripts for all schools attended (unofficial transcripts accepted); official score reports for his/her most recent standardized test (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, SAT, ACT, etc.); an essay of 500 words or fewer words discussing a research paper, presentation, dissertation or other intellectual project he/she is currently working on or recently complete; a writing sample of 3,000 words less; and a resume/curriculum vitae (must be in .doc, .txt, .rft., or .pdf). Students must also arrange for two letters of recommendation. The recommenders will be sent an email by IHS's online system with the recommendation form. Candidates submitting material in any language other than English must provide an English translation. Certain supporting materials will be accepted by mail, as well as online; these include official score reports, the optional resume, and the application fee (if paid by check).
