Number of Awards & Eligibility: 41 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have an exemplary interest in food science and research together with demonstrated scientific aptitude. Research in such disciplines as genetics, horticulture, nutrition, microbiology, biochemistry, engineering, chemistry, etc. is not eligible unless it is directly related to the student's research program in food science, except as otherwise noted.
  3. Must be enrolled in graduate studies leading to an M.S. and/or Ph.D. at the time the scholarship becomes effective.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Additional Information: Certain scholarships awarded under this program require research in specific areas of food technology. The school of enrollment can be any educational institution conducting fundamental investigations for the advancement of food science and food technology, unless there are stated exceptions of scholarship criteria for sponsored scholarships. All previous IFT scholarship recipients must be IFT members to be eligible for another scholarship award.

Award Amount: Awards range from $500 to $5,000. Additional details are available online. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. Students must submit a new application to be considered for another award. The award will be distributed in two equal payments, one on Aug. 15 and one on Jan. 15.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,750.

Applications are available on the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) website. All applications must be typed and in English. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: an official copy of his/her transcript(s) of all undergraduate and graduate university work completed to date; and three letters of recommendation from deans, department heads, and/or professors who have supervised his/her most recent academic work. These letters should present essential facts regarding the student's scholastic record; character and personality; interest and capability in research; ability to cooperate; capacity for work; and extracurricular activities. All students must include on the application a typewritten statement outlining his/her proposed field of research and methods of approach. Graduating college seniors should indicate the research area they are most interested in undertaking. Applications must be submitted to the head of the department where the student will be pursuing graduate studies by the deadline date. The department head will submit all completed applications to IFT.
