Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be currently enrolled as a J.D. law student at an ABA-accredited law school.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be enrolled full time or part time.

Description: This writing contest is open to all full- and part-time J.D. law students at an ABA-accredited law school. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Application requirements for the James Boskey ADR Writing Competition are:

Additional Information: Each entry shall be the original work of a single individual and constitute an independent subject. The ideas and work reflected by each entry must be the author's own. The author must perform all of the key tasks of identifying the topic, i.e. research, analyze, and formulate a position and argument for the topic. The writing and revising of the paper must be conducted by the author. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: clarity of the theme or thesis presented; significance of the topic to the field of onflict resolution; originality and creativity of topic treatment; quality of analysis; quality of research and authority provided; and technical quality of writing, including organization, grammar, syntax and form. Officers, directors and employees of the American Bar Association and their immediate household and family members are ineligible to enter the competition. Previously published essays are not eligible.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. In addition, the winning essay will be considered for possible publication in 'Dispute Resolution Magazine'.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

This is an essay contest. Application forms are available on the American Bar Association website. To enter, students must submit an essay of 15 to 25 pages in length (including endnotes or footnotes) addressing any aspect of dispute resolution practice, theory, or research. The essay must be typed, double-spaced, with 12-point font and one-inch margins. All students must also complete the online entry form. The essay must then be emailed to the address provided in .pdf. The subject line of the email must be "Attn: Boskey Dispute Resolution Essay Competition". Entries must be submitted by the deadline date.
