Description: This award is available for U.S. students who are about to complete, or have completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. Each fellow is required to attend a four-week Summer Institute on the Constitution held in July at Georgetown University and must agree to teach constitutional issues or history for at least one year following his/her graduation.

Application requirements for the James Madison Junior Fellowship Program are:

  • Application form
  • Essay
  • Official Transcript
  • Recommendation letters (3)
Additional Information: The foundation offers two fellowships: 'junior' fellowships are awarded to outstanding college seniors and college graduates without teaching experience; and 'senior' fellowships are awarded to superior current teachers. Applicants receiving junior fellowships must complete their programs in two years time. In addition, each fellow is required to attend the foundation's Summer Institute during the term of the fellowship. The four-week Summer Institute is held at Georgetown University each summer. Upon graduation, fellows must teach for one full year for each academic year of aid received under a fellowship, preferably in the state from which the recipient won the fellowship.

Award Amount: $12,000 annually, renewable for one additional year for a total award of $24,000. Normally, fellows receive less than the maximum amount. Payments are made only for the actual costs of tuition, required fees, books, and room & board; and are made only for the minimum number of credits required for the degree for which a fellow is registered. Each fellow must make satisfactory progress toward the degree, remain in good academic standing, and complete graduate study within the two-year time period.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $24,000.
