Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Students should note that these fellowships are extremely competitive; in the previous award cycle, the trust awarded 8 fellowships.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a college junior who will enter his/her senior year in the fall following the deadline, or a candidate for a Ph.D. who will defend his/her dissertation by June. Postdoctoral and master's degree students are not eligible.
  3. Must be enrolled in a university located in the United States.
  4. Preference is given to students who are studying in the humanities.
  5. Must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement.

Description: This award is for college seniors who will receive a bachelor's degree by June and candidates for a Ph.D. who will defend their dissertation by June.

Application requirements for the Josephine De Karman Fellowship are:

  • Official Transcript
  • Personal statement
Additional Information: To be competitive, graduate applicants should have outstanding letters of recommendation, significant publications, and have completed several chapters of the dissertation at the time of application. Undergraduate applicants should have exceptional recommendations and grades plus a compelling record of original research or scholarship. Although the competition is open to students from any university or college, the vast majority of awards go to students at top-tier schools. Winners will be announced on or around April 15.

Award Amount: Fellows will receive approximately $25,000 annually for graduate students pursuing a PhD.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Applications are available on the Josephine De Karman Fellowship Trust website. In addition to a completed application, the student must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation (sealed with the signature of the letter writer across the flap); official academic transcripts; and a 250- to 300-word statement of intellectual interest. Additional pertinent information may be submitted, but must not exceed two pages in length. All application materials must be mailed together in one package and postmarked no later than midnight on the deadline date.
