Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a college sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in the upcoming academic year.
  3. Must be a female.
  4. Must be enrolled in a mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology baccalaureate or graduate program in the United States.
  5. Must be enrolled full time.

Additional Information: This scholarship is awarded in memory of Kate Gleason, who in 1914 became the first female member of ASME and successfully paved the way for the emergence of women in the field of engineering. The Kate Gleason Scholarship will be awarded to a female engineering student who exemplifies the same entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to engineering. Applicants must be enrolled in an ABET-accredited school for the upcoming academic year. Information regarding accreditation status is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx. Applicants also must have established a grade point average in their degree programs to qualify. If applicants have not established a grade point average at the college level, they are not eligible to apply. The award recipient will be selected on the basis of scholastic ability and potential contribution to the mechanical engineering profession. All applicants will be notified of the scholarship results between June 15 and July 1. Scholarship money will be sent to scholarship winners by the end of August.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarship awardees from past years will not be selected to receive additional scholarships. Students must apply again each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) website. Please note: The applicant must be an ASME student member in good standing at time of application. If the applicant is not currently an ASME member, he/she can become a member before applying. Membership information is available online on the ASME website. The applicant must use his/her email address and ASME member number to access the online application. Issues regarding his/her ASME membership should be directed to [email protected] In addition to the online application, the student must submit the following materials: proof from his/her school that he/she is accepted and enrolled (if applicant will be in the first year at a new school); official transcripts from all past engineering study (uploaded into application); financial information, to include his/her anticipated resources and expenses from July 1 of the current year to June 30 of the next year; an essay describing his/her personal interest and goals in engineering, contributions to the profession, participation and/or achievement in professional societies and school/community groups, and any other relevant facts; and a maximum of two letters of recommendation from faculty members, professors, or supervising engineers who can comment on his/her character, engineering involvement, and potential for leadership or significant contributions to the profession (uploaded into application). The student need only submit one application to be considered for all scholarships for which he/she is eligible. Applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
