Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled in an occupational therapy program.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate students; 9 credits per semester for graduate students).
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a college junior, senior or a graduate student.

Description: This scholarship is for Hawaii college juniors, seniors, and graduate students who are in an occupational therapy program. Students must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

Additional Information: This fund memorializes Laura Dowsett who was instrumental in creating the first occupational therapy program in Hawai'i. She was the director of the occupational therapy department at Queens Hospital for 16 years. She also founded the Occupational Therapy Association of Hawai'i and served as its president for seven years. All students must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: The average award amount is $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the provider's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provier's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application.
