Number of Awards & Eligibility: 14 awards offered annually. One monetary award will be offered for each scholarship.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must pursue one of the following degrees in nursing: Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Associate Degree in Nursing; Licensed Practical Nurse; or Licensed Vocational Nurse.
  3. Must be an African American.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a member of NBNA and a member of a local chapter (if one exists in his/her area).
  6. Must be currently enrolled in a nursing program and have one or more full years of classes left.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for members of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) who are currently enrolled in a nursing program with at least one year of study remaining.

Additional Information: Applicants must have a minimum of one full year of school remaining and be in good scholastic standing at the time of application.

Award Amount: Awards range from $1,000 to $6,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,500.

Applications are available online from the National Black Nurses Association, Inc. (NBNA) website. The applicant should submit only one application; he/she will automatically be considered for an award if the eligibility requirements are met. In addition to a completed application, the following materials must be submitted: an official transcript from an accredited school of nursing; a two-page essay addressing the topic listed on the website; and two letters of recommendation (one from the applicant's school of nursing and one from the local chapter, or a nurse in the area if a local chapter does not exist). Additional items may accompany the application in support of the candidate's eligibility and desirability and may include the following: documented evidence of participation in student nurse activities and involvement in the African American community in the form of letters, news clippings, awards, certificates, etc. Official transcripts must be postmarked by the deadline date. The completed application and all supporting materials must be submitted via email to Gessie Belizaire by 5 p.m. on the deadline date.
