The Nursing Student Loan-for-Service Program is a state program, administered through the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED), established to help increase the number of nurses in areas of the state which have experienced shortages by making educational loans to students entering nursing programs. The award is based on the financial need of the student. The Health Professional Advisory Committee will screen applications and rank individuals based on the applicant’s academic eligibility, ability to describe the need for the program, and intent to work in a designated shortage area as approved by the New Mexico Higher Education Department. Students will receive award or denial notification by August 1. Recipients of this award must agree to a service contract to provide one year of service for each academic year of funding. Failure to meet the obligation may result in severe principal and interest penalties.
