Number of Awards & Eligibility: 18 awards offered annually. There are typically 30 applicants for this scholarship.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must attend a public or private, two- or four-year institution in Ohio.
  5. Must have a career interest in environmental science and/or environmental engineering.
  6. Must be entering his/her second year at a two-year institution OR his/her last (fourth or fifth) year at a four-year institution by the fall term.

Description: This scholarship is offered to U.S. students who are attending an Ohio college and are in their second year of study at a two-year school or their last (fourth or fifth) year of study at a four-year school. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and a career interest in environmental science or environmental engineering.

Additional Information: Selection for the scholarship is based on the following: (1) academic record with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, (2) education, employment and/or internships, honors/awards, professional memberships, publications, presentations given and professional meetings attended, and community service, (3) reasons for choosing a career in environmental science or environmental engineering and how the scholarship will help, (4) original research, scholarship, employment and/or internships, or other unique contributions to environmental science or environmental engineering, (5) extracurricular activities and participation in organizations that demonstrate leadership, interpersonal skills and social responsibility, and (6) letters of recommendation from education or environmental professionals.

Award Amount: $1,250 annually for students at two-year schools and $2,500 annually for students at four-year schools. All awards are non-renewable. Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, books, personal protection equipment, tools, instruments, and field equipment, but not housing.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,875.

Applications are available online on the Ohio Academy of Science website and must be completed online. The attachments to the completed application must consist of the following: a current transcript with the grade point average circled (an official transcript must be included with the original application, and unofficial transcripts should be included in the copies); a vita, biosketch or resume of two pages or less that follows the guidelines in the application; two letters of recommendation from education or environmental professionals (one letter must be from a faculty member); and a self-addressed, stamped postcard to acknowledge receipt of application. If the applicant is enrolled in a four-year college, he/she must also submit three separate essays, one for each of the topics listed on the application. Each essay must not exceed one page in length, but the applicant may use the front and back of a page. All essays should be double-spaced with a 12-point font and 1 inch margins. The requirements for the essay differ slightly for students in two-year colleges; they must write a single essay addressing all three of the topics on the application. This essay may not exceed three pages, but the student may use the front and back of each page. The essay must be double-spaced with a 12-point font and 1 inch margins. The complete application must be submitted online and any additional documents must be mailed to the provided address.
