Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In the 2012-2013 academic year (the most recent year for which data is available), there were 47 awards disbursed.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Oklahoma.
  3. Must plan to teach in a critical teacher shortage area. The current shortage areas are as follows: art, early childhood education, elementary education, English, family/consumer sciences, foreign language, mathematics, music, physical education/health, science, school counselor, school psychologist, social studies, and special education.
  4. Must attend an Oklahoma college or university.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  6. Must be enrolled full or part time. *Please note: Full-time students will be given priority in awarding scholarships.
  7. Must be an incoming or current undergraduate student.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available to Oklahoma undergraduate students who are attending an Oklahoma college or university. Students must plan to teach in an Oklahoma public school in a critical teacher shortage area.

Additional Information: The Future Teachers Scholarship Program was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education as an incentive to encourage the preparation of teachers in critical shortage areas in the public schools of Oklahoma. Each recipient must agree to teach in a shortage area in an Oklahoma public school for a minimum of three consecutive years upon graduation and licensure as a teacher. Students may be nominated on the basis of one of the following criteria: a cumulative high school grade point average ranking in the top 15 percent of his/her high school graduating class; an ACT or SAT score ranking in the top 15 percent for high school graduates of the same year; admission to a professional education program at an accredited Oklahoma institution of higher education; or an undergraduate record of outstanding success, as defined by the institution.

Award Amount: An award amount for each nominated student will be determined by the college the student attends. Annual award limits are set each year by the State Regents Office. The current award limits are as follows: full-time students with 60 or more hours completed toward a bachelor's degree can receive a maximum of $1,500; full-time students with less than 60 hours completed can receive up to $1,000; part-time students with 60 hours or more can receive up to $750; and part-time students with 60 hours or less can receive up to $500. Recipients may receive the scholarship for not more than four years, or the equivalent of four years, of full-time study.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,238.
