Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 25 awards offered annually. At least 12 scholarships will be provided for each of the two annual deadlines.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  3. Must major in electrical or computer engineering, computer science, or a well-defined computer-related field of engineering.
  4. Must be an active member of an IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter.
  5. Must be a full-time student.
  6. Must be a current college junior or senior or graduate student at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for international and U.S. college juniors, seniors and/or graduate students who are majoring in electrical or computer engineering, computer science, or a well-defined computer-related field of engineering. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and be an active member of an IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter.

Application requirements for the Richard E. Merwin Scholarship are:

  • Essay
Additional Information: Evaluation criteria include involvement in chapter activities (40 percent), academic achievement (30 percent), other extracurricular activities in college (10 percent), and letter of evaluation by branch chapter advisor (20 percent). A brief statement will be submitted by each winner at the end of the academic year outlining his/her accomplishments. Student winners of the Computer Society's Richard Merwin or UPE/CS award for the previous year (13 months) are not eligible for this award. The selected winners of this award will have the opportunity to serve as IEEE CS Student Ambassadors for the particular IEEE region to which they belong.

Award Amount: $1,000 or more, non-renewable. This scholarship is only available for one academic year (nine months) starting in September, and paid in four installments.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Scholarship information is available on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Computer Society website. The submission must also include a one-page summary of how he/she envisions his/her role as a student ambassador serving as liaison between the CAB Student Activities Vice-Chair and the IEEE CS student members in his/her region. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted through the online application form no later than the deadline date.
