Additional Information: The SULI program places students in paid internships in science and engineering fields at various Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of their experience. Interns work with professionals on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. Applicants may choose from a 10-week summer internship that runs from May to August or a 16-week internship during the fall (August through December) or spring (January through May) semesters. It is the responsibility of each participant to secure health insurance coverage before arriving at his/her appointment site. Students are required to participate for the full term of the program, including attending all scheduled events, lectures, tours and group activities. Participants should expect to spend more than 40 hours per week and more than 8 hours per day in activities and/or research related to their internships. At the end of the internship the student is required to submit and/or give a presentation on his/her research topic, and all applicants are required to submit an abstract in the appropriate format. Students may participate in a maximum of two internships during the course of their college career. Students are limited to the number and type of appointments they can receive. Students attending a community college are encouraged to apply to the Community College Institute for Science and Technology first in order to be eligible for the maximum number of internships; however, community college students and pre-service teachers are also eligible to apply for the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship. Please note: The recipient will need to check with his/her school to see if his/her research experience qualifies for college credit. The Department of Energy and the laboratory that administers his/her internship will provide him/her with the appropriate documentation.

Award Amount: A weekly stipend of $425 is provided for the duration of the internship. Round trip costs are provided for students who live more than 50 miles from their designated internship site (some restrictions may apply; see website for transportation reimbursement information). All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,200.
