In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a high school or college student (graduate students included).
  4. Must be attending or plan to attend a U.S. institution, except for students residing in or attending school in Rhode Island.
  5. Must read the book 'Signal Grace' by T.M. Yates and submit an essay on one of the current year's topics.

Description: This essay contest is open to U.S. high school and college students who submit an essay on the book "Signal Grace" by T.M. Yates. Students must attend a U.S. institution, except for students residing in or attending school in Rhode Island.

Additional Information: There are no age limits and there are no minimum ACT, SAT, or grade point average requirements for this contest. Aspiring college students who are not quite sure of their path are strongly encouraged to participate. After an applicant's essay is determined to be eligible, it will be judged based on several criteria. Judges will value essays that are thoughtful, well-organized, and demonstrate both a distinct command of the English language and the student's "voice". Unique, coherent thoughts will be given more weight than proper grammar. The winning essay must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the book 'Signal Grace'. The winner will be selected in late August, and the winner will be notified within two weeks. Relatives and contractors of the contest sponsor are ineligible.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on T. M. Yates' website. In addition to the application form, each student must write an essay in English of 500 to 1,000 words on one of the current year's topics regarding the book "Signal Grace" by T.M. Yates. Typewritten essays must be double-spaced and typed in one of the following 12-point fonts: Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman. Handwritten essays are accepted but must contain the total word count at the end of the essay. No pictures or graphics are allowed in the essay or on the application form. Only one essay is allowed per applicant. Multiple submissions will disqualify all of that applicant's submissions. The essay must be the original work of the applicant. If plagiarism is discovered, it will result in disqualification. Entries may be emailed or mailed using the contact information listed. Entries must be received (if emailed) or postmarked (if mailed) by 11:59 p.m. ET on the deadline date.
