The stipend will be used to defray the cost of living expenses, pay for transportation to the internship site or supplement low-paying or unpaid internships. The focus of the grants will be aiding interns in small to medium-size newspapers or broadcast stations throughout the country. One of three grants will be awarded to a resident of the Pacific Northwest where Stan Chen spent a significant time as a journalist and mentor. Applicants must be an intern or have been accepted into a journalism internship program with a print broadcast company. Daily circulation for print companies must be under 100,000. For broadcast, markets 50 to 100 will be eligible.
