In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a current college junior or senior or a graduate student.
  2. Must have a serious interest in pursuing a career in journalism.
  3. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  4. Must study at an accredited institution in the United States.

Description: Current college juniors/seniors, and graduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism are eligible for this grant. Students must have secured an internship at a small- to medium-size company for print, online, broadcast or photography work.

Application requirements for the Stanford Chen Internship Grant are:

Additional Information: The stipend will be used to defray the cost of living expenses, pay for transportation to the internship site or supplement low-paying or unpaid internships. The focus of the grants will be aiding interns in small to medium-size newspapers or broadcast stations throughout the country. One of three grants will be awarded to a resident of the Pacific Northwest where Stan Chen spent a significant time as a journalist and mentor. Applicants must be an intern or have been accepted into a journalism internship program with a print broadcast company. Daily circulation for print companies must be under 100,000. For broadcast, markets 50 to 100 will be eligible.

Award Amount: $1,750 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,750.

Applications are available on the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a 200-word essay on the topic listed, one letter of recommendation, verification of his/her secured internship, and a brief statement justifying financial need. Applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
