Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a full-time student OR a part-time student currently employed in a security-related position (at least 10 percent of his/her time) either in a commercial company, the U.S. Government or the U.S military.
  4. Must be enrolled in a security-related program and have experience in or plan to enter the security profession.
  5. Must be a current undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university.

Additional Information: The NCMS Board of Directors established the Steven Garfinkel Scholarship Award to assist security professionals with their continuing education in the security field. This scholarship is open to both members and non-members. The following criteria will be considered in the selection of the scholarship award winners from among the applications submitted: a. Membership in NCMS b. Current enrollment in a security related degree or certification. c. Academic performance, as reflected by the unofficial transcript showing grade point average. d. Financial needs and access to other sources of financial assistance. e. Attainment of professional certifications such as the ISP, CPP, PCI, CISSP, etc. f. Status as a military veteran. g. Professional career aspirations once the degree is obtained, with a priority given to those who will remain in the security field.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable. A class schedule is required prior to disbursement of funds. Note: All funds must be used in the year the scholarship is awarded. NCMS is not able to carry over funds beyond Dec. 31.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online from the NCMS website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit a short essay addressing the topics listed on the application and the name, address and phone number of two references. The references must be a current supervisor, or if the applicant is self-employed, someone who has knowledge of his/her educational goals; and an advisor/instructor/professor at the college/university where he/she is enrolled. The student must also attach evidence of his/her grade point average and any military service. Mail, fax, or email completed application and attachments to NCMS using the contact information listed by the deadline date.
