Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered each year varies based on the number of eligible students and level of funding. In the 2013-2014 academic year (the most recent year for which data is available), there were 157 awards given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Tennessee.
  3. Must be enrolled at an eligible public or private college or university in Tennessee.
  4. Must be enrolled in a teacher education program. Please note: The applicant cannot be a licensed teacher, and cannot be employed or have been previously employed in a teaching position.
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be enrolled full time if applying as an undergraduate student, or at least half time if applying as a graduate/post-baccalaureate student.
  8. Must be a college junior, senior, or post-baccalaureate student at the time of application.

Description: This award is available for Tennessee college juniors, seniors, and post-baccalaureate students who are enrolled in a teacher education program at an eligible public or private college or university in Tennessee. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

Application requirements for the Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript
  • Standardized test scores
Additional Information: The Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program is intended to encourage exemplary students to enter the teaching field in Tennessee. Awards are very competitive and based on funding. Renewal applicants are given first priority. Those who accept the award must sign a promissory note and in doing so incur an obligation to teach PreK-12th grade in a Tennessee public school for one year for each year an award is received. Recipients must be employed as a full-time teacher to be considered for forgiveness. If recipients do not meet this obligation, the award must be repaid to TSAC. Repayment will begin if the recipient does not complete the plan of study or is not employed at an eligible PreK-12 school. Interest accrues at 9 percent from the date of each disbursement.

Award Amount: Awards are for a forgivable loan and are subject to available funding. Awards will be prorated for students enrolled less then full time. Awards are made in equal installments each term throughout the academic year. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years providing the student maintains a grade point average of 2.75 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,474.

Applications are available from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) College Pays website. In addition to a completed online application, the student must also submit the following materials: a letter of recommendation from an official of a state-approved teacher education program, attesting to the applicant's commitment to teaching and potential for success as a teacher; and official copies of all college or university transcripts and documentation verifying the standardized test scores used for admission to the teacher education program. Completed applications must be received by TSAC by the deadline.
