Number of Awards & Eligibility: There are four prizes awarded annually: one first place; one second place; and two third place.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must submit a paper on the historic role of naval power in global affairs.

Description: The General Prize Essay Contest is provided by the U.S. Naval Instititute. It is open to all essays submitted to Proceedings magazine.

Additional Information: Proceedings, the flagship magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute, aims to stimulate, illuminate, provoke, and, when appropriate, entertain. The magazine is not an organ of the Navy, the Marine Corps, or any other organization or institution, public or private. It is supportive, however, of the Sea Services and their mission. The General Prize Essay contest is perhaps the oldest continuously conducted writing contest in the entire United States. The Institute began work on the Contest in 1878 under the leadership of the most recognized and celebrated Naval Strategist in United States history, Alfred Thayer Mahan, then the Chairman of the Naval Institute. Prizewinners are brought to Annapolis (Washington, D.C.) in October of each year for a special presentation at the annual invitation-only Naval Institute Honors Night, celebrating the birthday of the Institute and all those who have contributed to our Mission during the year.

Award Amount: 1st Prize - $6,000; 2nd Prize - $3,000; 3rd Prize - $2,000. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,250.

This essay contest is open to all work published in Proceedings, the flagship magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute. Please see the USNI website for guidelines on submissions. The contest remains open to all persons eligible for membership (including those already members) in the Institute. The contest is conducted on a yearly basis for the 12 months from September to following September of the Award Year with all essays purchased by the Institute in this period eligible for the Prize. Today the judging is done by the Editorial Board of the Institute. The winning essay to be published in the Proceedings. Essays must be submitted via emailed by the deadline date. Word document format (.doc, .docx) is preferred.
