Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually, one for each of the three internship periods.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be from an underrepresented community of color.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must have a demonstrated interest or experience in nonprofit organizations, philanthropy, and the social sector.
  5. Must be a continuing undergraduate or graduate student to apply.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Minority undergraduate and graduate students who have a background in the social sciences and humanities are eligible to apply for this fellowship. Recipients of the scholarship must intern for 12 to 15 weeks at the Aspen Institute's Washington, D.C. office.

Additional Information: The Hearst Scholar serves as an intern with the fund. During this internship, the Hearst Scholar undertakes research, writing, logistical, and administrative support for PSI's leadership initiatives, public programs, and convenings. The student must be able to intern for 12 to 15 weeks at the Washington, D.C., office of the Aspen Institute. Fall and spring internships will be part time (10 to 20 hours per week), and summer internships will be full time. All travel and housing costs must be covered by the student. Recipients may arrange with their colleges or universities to receive academic credit for this experience. The ideal candidate for this scholarship is a highly motivated continuing graduate or undergraduate student from an underrepresented community. He/she should have an excellent academic record and also have the following: outstanding research skills; excellent writing and communication skills; and demonstrated financial need.

Award Amount: A fellowship grant of approximately $2,000 will be awarded to the fall and spring fellows, and approximately $4,000 will be awarded to the summer fellow.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,667.

Additional information about this award is available on the Aspen Institute's Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation (PSI) website. There is no application form for this fellowship. To apply, the student must submit the following materials to Cinthia Schuman at the email address provided: a letter of interest (including information about dates of availability for the fellowship); a resume; an official transcript; a letter from the appropriate college or university financial aid officer certifying demonstrated financial need; and two letters of recommendation. Please note: Official transcripts, official financial aid documentation, and recommendation letters must be either given to the student in sealed envelopes and mailed in that fashion, or sent directly from the university or recommender to Lauren Stebbins via mail or email. If the student does not follow this procedure, his/her application will not be considered. The application materials must be received by the deadline date for the semester in which the student wishes to participate in the fellowship.
