Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  2. Must be African American.
  3. Must be a college freshman, sophomore or junior to apply for this award.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must be pursuing a degree in journalism or mass communications or other related fields (i.e. English, telecommunications, etc.).
  6. Must attend a college or university in the metro Atlanta area.
  7. Must be involved in a form of student media.
  8. This award is for U.S. students.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. undergraduate African-American students, majoring in journalism (or a related subject) with a grade point average of 2.9. Students must be attending a college or university in the metro Atlanta area.

Application requirements for the Xernona Clayton-Brady Scholarship are:

  • Essay

  • Work samples
  • Agreement for Disbursement of Scholarship
Additional Information: The selected students will be award the Xernona Clayton Scholarship in the fall, and will be recognized at the AABJ Awards Banquet.

Award Amount: $2,000 to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. $10,000 will be divided among the three recipients.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists (AABJ) website. The student must be a member of AABJ by the deadline date. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit: a typewritten, double-spaced essay of 300 to 500 words on the topic specified on the application; two professional letters of recommendation (sealed and non-AABJ related); an official college transcript; two to five copies of work samples samples and a signed Agreement for Disbursement of Scholarship Funds. Published articles or stories in broadcast or radio, new media (websites, blogs, etc.) or print formats as well as video or audio in broadcast or radio format are all acceptable forms of work samples. Completed application and all documents must be sent to the address provided and postmarked by the deadline date. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
