Additional Information: The purpose of the AFPE 'Gateway to Research' Undegraduate Scholarship is to enable faculty to nominate promising pre-professional degree pharmacy students or baccalaureate degree students for a scholarship that supports their participation in a faculty-mentored research project intended to encourage these students to consider pursing advanced graduate education and careers in the pharmaceutical sciences. Specifically, the purpose of the program is to increase the number of Pharm.D. students and baccalaureate science students who graduate and enroll in graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. in the basic, clinical, or administrative pharmaceutical sciences; and ultimately to careers in industry, on a pharmacy school faculty, or in related organizations. The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) acts in partnership with AFPE to offer an award recognizing international students, as well. All applicants must be enrolled for at least one full academic year after initiation of the award. Preference will be given to applications from students who need relevant research experience in order to have a basis to decide whether to pursue the Ph.D. degree in the pharmaceutical sciences. Students enrolled in joint Pharm.D./Ph.D. programs may not apply. The student awardee must not accept any other concurrent research support. In case of multiple source awards, the student must choose only one research sponsor.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. $500 of this is provided to the student to attend an AAPS Annual Meeting and the sponsoring faculty member may use up to $500 of this amount in direct support of the research effort. The remaining balance is provided as a student stipend.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $70,000.
