Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of applicants and funding availability.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Ohio.
  3. Must pursue an approved nurse education program leading to licensure as an RN.
  4. Must attend an eligible college or university in Ohio.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  6. Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible program.

Description: This award is for Ohio undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in nursing. The student must serve as a registered nurse in Ohio after graduation for loan forgiveness.

Additional Information: Applicants will be awarded NEALP funding based on information received from the applicant’s institution, FAFSA data, and information from the NEALP application. Applicants are ranked based on FAFSA data, those that demonstrate the highest level of need are awarded first. Awarding continues from the next neediest student until funds are depleted for the year. If sufficient funds are available, as determined by the Ohio Board of Regents, loan assistance will be awarded to all eligible applicants. To qualify for loan cancellation, recipients must be employed full-time as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in the State of Ohio for a minimum of five years after graduation. *Please note: Due to limited funding available and the continued abundance of practicing LPNs, NEALP currently is making awards only to RN and nurse instructor candidates. Applicants must: not be in default or owe a refund to any federal financial aid program; and maintain an academic record which places the student in good academic standing within the institution. Notification of acceptance or denial for NEALP funding will be sent by the first week in September.

Award Amount: No more than $1,620 per year  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,620.

Applications are available online on the Ohio Board of Regents website. Before starting the application process, the student must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. As part of the online application, the student must provide information for two personal references, who cannot live at the same address and must be Ohio residents. If the student is under 18 years of age and/or has unfavorable credit, he/she must provide contact information for an Ohio resident to be a co-signer. After submitting the electronic application, students must print a copy of his/her application and mail it to the address provided within 10 days of completing the electronic application, or postmarked by July 15, whichever is sooner.
