The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society

Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Lehigh, Berks, or Northampton counties in Pennsylvania.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must enroll as a full-time student at an accredited U.S. medical school.
  5. Must major in medicine.
  6. Must be in his/her first year of medical school.

Description: This award is available for U.S. graduate students who are in their first year of medical school. Students must be a resident of Lehigh, Berks, or Northampton counties in Pennsylvania.

Additional Information: This scholarship was made possible through a memorial contribution from Mrs. Elena Pascal, Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance president, and Ms. Carla Vigilante, Mrs. Pascal's sister, in honor of their parents, Drs. Siegfried and Vigilante, who practiced medicine in Allentown for over 50 years.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society website, and are accepted after July 1. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation, documenting the applicant's integrity, interpersonal skills, and potential as a future physician from persons who know the applicant well (other than family members); a letter, on school letterhead, from the applicant's medical school verifying that he/she is enrolled full time at that institution and is a first-year medical student; and a typed one-page essay addressing the topic listed on the website. A personal interview is not required; however, it may be requested. Application materials most be postmarked by the deadline.
