Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation

Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 300 awards offered annually. The number of scholarships to be awarded per state will depend on the number and qualifications of the nominees. The awards will be given to two groups of students: those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the upcoming academic year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a United States citizen, a permanent resident, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. Nominations from permanent residents must include a letter of the nominee's intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as the Alien Registration Card).
  3. Must be a full-time student.
  4. Must have a college grade point average of 3.0 ('B') or higher.
  5. Must be a college sophomore or junior to apply for this undergraduate award.
  6. Must be pursuing a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.
  7. Must be in the upper fourth (top 25 percent) of his/her class.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. sophomores or juniors in college who are majoring in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. The applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher to be eligible.

Additional Information: The awards will be made on the basis of merit to students who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in a private practice.

Award Amount: Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Scholarship monies not used during one academic year are not transferable to the succeeding academic year. Junior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarship support, and senior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,250.

Additional information is available on the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation website. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his/her college or university using the official nomination materials available to each institution on the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation's website. Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students. Two-year institutions may nominate up to two students who are sophomores. The online application for nomination for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship consists of the following: an institution nomination; a nominee application; an essay of no more than two pages, relating to the student's chosen career; and the names and email addresses of three recommenders who can discuss the nominee's potential for a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. In addition to the completed online application, nominees must submit the original and one copy of the following: a transcript from nominee's current institution, including fall semester if available; transcript(s) from other institutions that nominee attended with grades for courses taken; a secondary school transcript; and documentation for home school in lieu of secondary school transcript, if applicable. Nominees who are permanent residents of the U.S. must also submit two photocopies of their permanent resident card and letter of intent to become a U.S. citizen. All nominations and supporting materials must be received by the last Friday in January
