In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of New Mexico.
  3. Must be enrolled in a nursing profession program leading to a degree or certification.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must attend an accredited New Mexico public postsecondary educational institution.
  6. Must be a high school graduate or older.
  7. Must be enrolled at least half-time.
  8. Must demonstrate financial need.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: To apply, students must complete the New Mexico Medical Student Loan-for-Service application and complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. In addition to a complete application, students must also submit the following materials: school certification; a written essay; two letters of recommendations; a letter of acceptance; and official academic transcripts. This award is for New Mexico residents who are enrolled at a public college or university in New Mexico. The student must be accepted into a into a Nursing program leading to a degree or certification and must declare intent to practice as a health professional in a designated shortage area in New Mexico.

Additional Information: The Nursing Student Loan-for-Service Program is a state program, administered through the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED), established to help increase the number of nurses in areas of the state which have experienced shortages by making educational loans to students entering nursing programs. The award is based on the financial need of the student. The Health Professional Advisory Committee will screen applications and rank individuals based on the applicant’s academic eligibility, ability to describe the need for the program, and intent to work in a designated shortage area as approved by the New Mexico Higher Education Department. Students will receive award or denial notification by August 1. Recipients of this award must agree to a service contract to provide one year of service for each academic year of funding. Failure to meet the obligation may result in severe principal and interest penalties.

Award Amount: No more than $12,000 per year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.
