Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a native-born or naturalized U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have reached his/her 20th, but not 31st, birthday as of the application deadline date.
  4. Must submit an original music composition in one or more of the following categories: piano solo, voice, chamber music (instrumental only).

Description: This composition competition is open to U.S. citizens who are 20 to 30 years of age as of the application deadline. Entrants must submit an original compositions in one or more of the following categories: piano solo, voice, chamber music (instrumental only).

Additional Information: Applicants must be active members of a senior music club of the National Federation of Music Clubs, or individual senior members for the current year of the application. If the applicant is not already an eligible member, he/she may join by submitting the appropriate membership dues with the application. Judges will consider creativity, technical excellence, and special talent shown by the composer. If no entry is worthy of an award, none will be made. The winner is required to grant the right of performance for any meeting of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Entrants must be the sole composer of the composition. It must be an original work that has neither been published nor awarded any national prize.

Award Amount: Awards are made as follows: piano solo, $2,500; voice, $2,500; first place in chamber music, $4,000; second place in chamber music, $2,000. All awards are non-renewable. Please note: In the event of financial shortfalls, advertised award amounts may be adjusted. Applicants would be notified of the award change.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,000.

Applications are available online on the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) website by clicking on the 'Senior Division' link. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit a $20 entry fee (payable by check or money order) and an original compositions in one or more of the following categories: piano solo, voice, and/or chamber music (instrumental only). Only one composition may be submitted in each category, legibly notated in black ink, or clearly reproduced from legibly notated master copy. The manuscript must be bound. Loose sheets are not acceptable. In addition, three CDs of the composition are required for the judges. Manuscripts must be submitted anonymously with a nom de plume in the upper right corner of the composition with performance time underneath. The official application must be enclosed in a plain envelope bearing the nom de plume which appears on the manuscript. The true name of the composer must not appear on the manuscript or envelope, but it must be stated on the application. Applications must be mailed first class to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
