Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three students will receive scholarships each year the program is available.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a high school student at the time of application.
  2. Must be between the ages of 14 and 18.
  3. Must attend a high school in the California Bay Area.
  4. Must play jazz and submit recording samples as described on the application form.

Description: The Jazz At The Ballroom Scholarship is available for high school students in the Bay Area who are active musicians. Students must submit a sample of their musical performance and finalists will be invited to participate in a live concert where the scholarship winners will be selected.

Additional Information: The competition is open to high school jazz instrumentalists in the Bay Area between the ages of 14-18. The Bay Area is defined as Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma Counties. Applicants must be under 18 years of age and have the application submission approved by a parent or legal guardian. Applicants must be enrolled in a Bay Area High School. Applicants must be able to attend a performance in the Bay Area in April 2020 alongside world-renowned jazz musicians.

Award Amount: Winners will receive $1,500 scholarships. In addition, their school's music program will receive an additional $1,000 for instruments or other expenses.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

To be considered, applicants must complete an entry form, a personal statement, and include a recording of their performance. All recordings must be recorded in digital format (to be submitted electronically or on flash drive) and must include the following three audition pieces: one up-tempo standard?; one ballad standard; and one blues piece. Applicants are also required to submit one paragraph explaining the applicant’s background in jazz, favorite artists and musical influences, future goals and plans in music and jazz study, and the use of the scholarship money (i.e. private jazz study, tuition for a jazz focused music program etc). All applications must be submitted by mail or email no later than the deadline date.
