Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a high school senior or undergraduate student.
  4. Must be a resident of Berks County, Pennsylvania.
  5. Must pursue or intend to pursue a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Science in Music degree or a music certificate. Studies should specifically be pursuing orchestral strings studies.
  6. Must have been an active participant in his/her high school or college music program or a music program outside the school.
  7. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or 85 percent or higher on a 100-percent scale).

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. high school seniors and undergraduate students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Science in Music degree, or a music certificate (specifically in orchestral strings). Students must have been actively involved in his/her high school or college music program or a program outside of school, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: This fund was established in 2013 by Marjorie Fegley in memory of her husband James E. Fegley, who passed away in 2003. Jim and Margie Fegley opened Fegley's Violin Shop from their home in Reading in 1979. Fegley's Violin Shop began providing services to the local stringed instrument community but soon the business expanded to provide quality work for students and professional players throughout the country. Jim became interested in working with stringed instruments at an early age. Starting in 1962 he began apprenticing with various prominent luthiers in the United States. Jim had considered a professional music career while playing in area symphonies but his mechanical inclination and desire to work with his hands guided him to become a craftsman. All applicants will be notified in May. Berks County Community Foundation employees, board members and/or committee members are not eligible to apply for or be nominated for a scholarship offered by Berks County Community Foundation, nor are their immediate family members. However, immediate family members are eligible to be nominated and recognized as the recipient of a scholarship, but without the financial award of the scholarship. Immediate families include spouses; children, stepchildren, grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, and their respective spouses; siblings and their spouses; and ancestors. The ineligibility period for Berks County Community Foundation board members or employees and their family members extends five years after board service or employment terminates. The ineligibility period for committee members who are not Berks County Community Foundation staff or board is in effect only during their term of service and is only related to the committee on which they make decisions.

Award Amount: $1,100 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,100.

Applications are available on the Berks County Community Foundation (BCCF) website. All applicants must apply via the BCCF online application. Students must create an account to access the application. As part of the application, the student will be required to submit the following materials: an essay of 250 to 500 words that addresses the topic "How does your pursuit of music tie into your future career plans?"; his/her most recent high school or college transcript; and contact information for a music instructor and someone (professor, teacher, school official, clergy, employer, advisor, or community leader) that knows him/her well. These persons should be willing to write a letter of recommendation on the student's behalf. The recommender will receive instructions via email for submitting the letter. Applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
