Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a native-born or naturalized U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have reached his/her 19th birthday, but not his/her 26th birthday, by the application deadline.
  4. Must be legally blind with 20/200 or less vision after correction.
  5. Must have an interest in music composition.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is open to U.S. students who are 19 to 25 years of age and are legally blind (20/200 or less vision after correction). Students must submit an original music composition.

Application requirements for the Music for the Blind Composition Award are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letter
  • $5 entry fee
  • Music comps.
  • Affidavit of blindness
Additional Information: All entrants must be members of an active or associate student/collegiate music club, or hold an individual membership in the National Federation of Music Clubs. Dues for membership in the NFMC are $16. This award is funded by the Agnes Fowler Endowment.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Please note: In the event of financial shortfalls, advertised award amounts may be adjusted. Applicants will be notified of the award change.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) website by clicking on the 'Student Collegiate Division' link. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: an entry fee of $5 (check or money order); an original composition and two copies of the manuscript (must be regular printed music, not braille music); a recording of the composition on a CD (must be playable on a CD player); a letter of recommendation from his/her teacher; an affidavit stating that he/she is legally blind with 20/200 or less vision after correction; and a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of materials. All application materials must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
