Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a native-born or naturalized U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a member of the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, or National Guard.
  4. Must create an original music composition in one of the following categories: solo works for piano, organ, strings, woodwinds, brass, or percussion; original works for band, orchestra, or chorus; original works for large or small ensembles or church music; American opera, American musical theater, or patriotic music; folk music, ethnic music, or jazz.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This music composition competition is open to members of the U.S. military (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, and National Guard). Entries are accepted in the following categories: solo works for piano, organ, strings, woodwinds, brass, or percussion; original works for band, orchestra, or chorus; original works for large or small ensembles or church music; American opera, American musical theater, or patriotic music; folk music, ethnic music, or jazz.

Application requirements for the NFMC U.S. Armed Forces American Music Award are:

  • Application form
  • $20 entry fee
  • Music composition
  • CD recording
Additional Information: Winning compositions previously entered may not be re-entered. Entrants may win first place multiple times, but not consecutively.

Award Amount: Awards are given as follows: first place, $500; second place, $250. Awards are non-renewable. Please note: In the event of financial shortfalls, advertised award amounts may be adjusted. Applicants will be notified of the award change.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $375.

Applications are available on the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) website by clicking on the 'Senior Division' link. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: an entry fee of $20 (payable to NFMC); an original music composition; and a CD recording of the composition (must be playable on a CD player). Eligible categories for compositions are: solo works for piano, organ, strings, woodwinds, brass, or percussion; original works for band, orchestra, or chorus; original works for large or small ensembles or church music; American opera, American musical theater, or patriotic music; folk music, ethnic music, or jazz. Only one entry per applicant per year will be accepted for this competition. Applications must be mailed to the address provided and must be received by the deadline date.
