Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of qualified applicants and amount of available funding. In the 2012-2013 academic year, there were 5 awards disbursed.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen, national, hold an immigration visa, or classified as a political refugee. Persons holding a temporary or student visa are not eligible.
  3. Must be accepted to or enrolled in an eligible program.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher if currently enrolled in and attending a nursing program.
  5. Must attend a school of nursing in the State of Virginia which is approved by the State Board of Nursing.
  6. Must enroll in a nurse midwife or nurse practitioner program.
  7. Must be a resident of Virginia for one or more years to apply for this award.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for Virginia undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in a nurse midwife or nurse practitioner program. Students must attend a Virginia college and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: The Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife Scholarship Program provides scholarship awards to students who agree to practice full time as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife in a medically underserved area of Virginia. All awards are made by a Nursing Scholarship Committee, appointed by the State Board of Health. The Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) of the State Health Department serves as the staff element to the Nursing Scholarship Committee and has no role in the determination of scholarship awarded to recipients. The guidelines for determining scholarship awards to recipients are established by the Nursing Scholarship Committee. Preference for the scholarship award shall be given to residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia who are minority students and students enrolled in family practice, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, adult health, and geriatric nurse practitioner programs. Participants residing in Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) as determined by the Board of Health will also be given preference.

Award Amount: The amount of each scholarship award is dependent upon the amount of money appropriated by the Virginia General Assembly. In prior academic years, the average award was $5,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) website. Please note: The application period is May 1 through June 30. Applications will not be accepted before May 1. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: verification of his/her Virginia residency (accepted documents listed on the application); official transcripts from all schools attended; and a one-page narrative summary that explains the significance of this scholarship in pursuing his/her educational goals, any school/community activities, and any skill-set that is pertinent to the nursing profession. The student must also include the additional topics listed on the application. "Section 7-Narrative Summary" must appear at the top of the page, and the student must sign and date the bottom of the page. Please note: The dean, chair, or director of the student's nursing school must complete and sign one section of the application. The application must be typed; handwritten applications will not be accepted. Applications must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
