Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three scholarships are awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must currently be pursuing a health education degree (e.g., health education, community health education, public health education, school health education)
  2. Must be national SOPHE members for at least three months.
  3. Must have completed at least one-third of coursework required for their major.
  4. Must demonstrated Financial Need.

Description: The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) is a nonprofit, independent professional association that represents a diverse membership of nearly 4,000 health education professionals and students in the United States and 25 international countries. The Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship is an annual award. This $2,500 scholarship is awarded to three deserving full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are national SOPHE members and who have excelled academically, demonstrated a commitment to addressing the public's health through a career in health education, and who have demonstrated financial need.

Application requirements for the Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship are:

  • Essay
  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript.
Additional Information: Students applying for this award must currently be pursuing a health education degree (e.g., health education, community health education, public health education, school health education), and must have completed at least one-third of coursework required for their major. This award is designated for tuition support and is paid directly to the student’s academic institution. Awards are presented at SOPHE's Annual Conference and individuals will also receive an $800 21st Century Scholarship to attend the conference.

Award Amount: The scholarship value is up to $2,500. This award is designated for tuition support and is paid directly to the student’s academic institution and is not renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

A complete application includes a current, official transcript including course titles, letter of recommendation from a faculty mentor, written statement from the student applicant, resume and the “SOPHE Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship Demonstrated Financial Need Form.”
