Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered may vary according to the amount of funds available. In prior academic years, there were 25 scholarships provided.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a legal resident of Delaware.
  3. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program leading to teacher certification.
  4. Must attend a Delaware college or university.
  5. Must be a full-time student. Awards may be prorated for part-time students in a qualifying program.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  7. Must have a combined SAT score of 1570 or higher (critical reading, math, and writing sections) if a high school senior.
  8. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher if a current undergraduate.
  9. Must be a graduating high school senior or currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  10. Must be ranked in the top 50 percent of his/her high school graduating class if a high school senior.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for Delaware students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program leading to teacher certification who plan to teach in a public school in Delaware. High school senior applicants must rank in the top half of their class and have a combined SAT score of 1570 or higher; undergraduate applicants must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

Additional Information: Preference is given to applicants planning to teach in a critical need area as defined by the Delaware Department of Education. Awards may be provided for programs of study not available in Delaware and may be prorated for part-time students in a qualifying program.

Award Amount: The award is in the form of a forgivable loan worth $5,000 annually for bachelor's and master's degree programs and $2,500 annually for associate's degree programs. Awards are renewable for up to three additional years. The loan will be forgiven at a rate of one year of teaching in a Delaware public school for one year of loan.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,800.

Applications are available at the Delaware Higher Education Office (DHEO) website. Most DHEO programs will require the student to submit additional documents including an unofficial transcript, SAT scores, and updated college enrollment information by the scholarship deadline. Students should follow the instructions in the Common Merit Application carefully. The Common Merit Application must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on the deadline date.
