Description: This award is for students enrolled in a New York State degree program, leading to a special education certification. These two $3,000 annual scholarships are per paid in two installments of $1,500 per semester. The funds must be claimed within a four-year period from the time the scholarship is awarded.

Additional Information: This scholarship honors Joseph T. Weingold, first President and Executive Director of The Arc New York. Mr. Weingold was a pioneer in the field and helped shape the national policies on intellectual and developmental disabilities. He was also at the center of policy developments positively affecting the lives of people with I/DD in New York State and across the nation for four decades before retiring in 1980. Consistent with his belief that people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities should have a distinct legal status, he originated the concept of a separate state agency, now the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, and became one of the primary founders of the national organization, The Arc.

Award Amount: The winner of the Joseph T. Weingold Scholarship will receive $3,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applicants need to first receive a nomination. Then will need to complete a form on the provider website and must supply two things. One, a letter of recommendation from local Chapter Executive Director or supervising Program Director. Two, verification of employment from Chapter Human Resources Department. The form also asks a series of prompted questions about your education, goals and experience with special needs. Submit by mail, fax or electronically.
