Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.
  2. Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student beginning Fall 2020 at an accredited US academic institution in the US, its territories, possessions, and Puerto Rico in an approved field of study
  3. Must be in an approved degree program: Research-based STEM Master's and Doctoral degrees. No professional or joint professional degrees (e.g., MD, MPH, MBA, JD, DDS, DVM, MD/PhD, JD/PhD)

Description: The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship scholarship is available for graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. NSF has funded over?50,000 Graduate Fellowships to more than 500,000 applicants.

Additional Information: The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and promotes its diversity. Since 1952, NSF has funded over 50,000 Graduate Research Fellowships out of more than 500,000 applicants. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, Google founder, Sergey Brin and Freakonomics co-author, Steven Levitt.

Award Amount: The award allows winners to pursue research at a US government lab or school of their choice. The amount of funding will vary depending on the program of study.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $46,000.

Applicants complete a form on the provider website once they have created a personal profile. They must include a 3-page personal statement, a 2-page graduate research plan, transcripts from all degree institutions, 3 or more reference writer names and 2 letters. All applications must be received no later than the deadline date.
