Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards provided annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must attend a public four-year college or university in California.
  2. Must be majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) related major.
  3. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  4. Must be an undergraduate sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student.

Description: The Samsung@First Scholars award is available for current undergraduate students entering the sophomore, junior, or senior year of study in a STEM related field. Applicants must attend a public four-year college or university in the state of California and must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Samsung@First Scholars program provides annual funding for the next generation of STEM leaders in California. Applicants must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics program at a public four-year college or university in California. Additional preference will be given to students in the greater Bay Area, including Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Fransisco, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma. Scholarship selection will be based on academic records, recommendations, financial need, and the student's submitted statements about their professional goals, scientific interests, and career aspirations.

Award Amount: Up to $15,000 per scholarship  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $45,000.

Applications are available on the Silicon Valley Community Foundation website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation (the letters must be from the people listed on the application); an official transcript of grades; a personal statement addressing the topics listed on the application; evidence of financial need as described on the application; and proof of U.S. citizenship (photocopy of birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers). The complete application packet must be completed online by the deadline date.
