What Kind of Welding Scholarships Can Students Apply for?

Welding scholarships are for college students pursuing welder training program. If you want to learn to weld, cut or solder, there are welding scholarships to offset the cost of trade school or welding school.

Welding scholarships may help you pursue a college degree or certificate. There are various programs in welding, brazing and soldering.

Some awards also may pay for training in engineering, manufacturing, construction, welding management or metals technology.

Many of these scholarships come from technical colleges and welding schools. The American Welding Society (AWS) also offers scholarships for members of local branches. For example, Sacramento, Houston or Puget Sound.

Some scholarships for welders are also available through providers who support construction trades. So, to be eligible you may need to be in a course of study leading to a degree in a construction related field.

Apart from your major, you may need to meet other criteria to apply as well. Things like a specific GPA range and proof of financial need.

Sometimes providers also ask to see pictures of past projects and work history. They may want you to write an essay stating your career goals too.

Why You Should Apply for a Welding Scholarship?

Welders work with hand held and remotely controlled tools to join and cut metal parts. Applying heat, they fuse metal pieces to form a strong bond.

The welding process is useful in so many industries. From automobile manufacturing and repair and aerospace. To shipbuilding, construction, pipelines and car racing.

If this career path interests you, you need a high school diploma and technical training. Depending on the skills you want to hone, this may include pursuing an associate degree.

If you secure a welding scholarship, as it is not a student loan, you do not need to repay the funds as long as you abide by the terms.

This financial help may help you break into a career as a trained welder. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers earn about $44,190 median pay in 2020.

Some welders in specialty trade contracting may earn even more too. Industrial machinery mechanics for instance, earn about $55,490 per year in 2020. Then some experienced pipe fitters report median annual wages of $56,330 in 2020, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.
