In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have an interest in writing and/or military affairs.
  4. The contest is open to both amateur and professional writers.

Description: This essay contest is open to any U.S. citizen who submits an essay of 3,000 words or less. Check the USNI website for exact essay topic each year.

Application requirements for the Marine Corps Essay Contest are:

Additional Information: Read more about the specific writing topic on the USNI website. All submissions must be original analytical and/or interpretive works not currently submitted or previously published elsewhere. The Proceedings staff members will evaluate every essay and screen the top essays to a special Essay Selection Committee of at least six members who will include two members of the Naval Institute's Editorial Board and four subject experts. All essays will be judged in the blind -- i.e., the Proceedings staff members and judges will not know the authors of the essays.

Award Amount: $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500 will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, respectively. The winning authors will also receive a complementary membership in the U.S. Naval Institute and Naval Intelligence Professionals. Selected essays will be published in a future issue of the U.S. Naval Institute's "Proceedings."  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Each applicant must submit an original essay (no more than 2,500 words) addressing the current year's topic. Entries must be submitted via email, as an attachment to the email address provided, with Naval History Essay Contest Submission in the subject line. Check the USNI website for exact details regarding the format, footnotes, word count, and email instructions. All entries must be submitted by the deadline date and emailed to the provided email address.
