Number of Awards & Eligibility: Awards are distributed as follows: 15 will be given to students pursuing post-baccalaureate nursing education, and approximately 40 will be given to students who plan to teach nursing.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have an active unencumbered Alabama registered nurse license.
  4. Must have been a resident of Alabama for a period of one year or more immediately preceding the application.
  5. Must have been admitted to a graduate program seeking a master's or doctorate degree in nursing or nurse anesthesia OR be seeking an advanced degree with the goal of teaching nursing in an Alabama college or university.
  6. Must attend an accredited school of nursing in Alabama.
  7. Must attend school for six or more hours each semester during two consecutive semesters during the year of funding.
  8. Must hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing. If applying for the nursing educators program, the student does not have to hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing but must have substantially met the requirements for such a degree.

Description: This scholarship is available for Alabama graduate students who have been admitted to a graduate program seeking a master's or doctorate degree in nursing or nurse anesthesia in an accredited school of nursing in Alabama OR who plan to teach nursing in an Alabama college or university. Students must hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing and have an unencumbered Alabama registered nurse license.

Application requirements for the Alabama Board of Nursing Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: In addition to all other eligibility criteria, the student must be a person of good character. The student must agree to either teach nursing full-time in an Alabama college or university for at least one year immediately after graduation (if receiving the Scholarship to Educate Nursing Instructors) or practice professional nursing in Alabama for at least one year immediately after graduation (if receiving the Scholarship for Post-Baccalaureate Nursing Education). Prior to Oct. 1 of the year of study, the recipient must submit a signed promissory note and an agreement to fulfill obligations to repay funds. Funds must be repaid if the recipient fails to continue full-time study, complete his/her program of study, or teach/practice nursing in Alabama for one year after graduation. The announcement of scholarship recipients will be released after the September 2015 Alabama Board of Nursing meeting.

Award Amount: Awards are distributed as follows: post-baccalaureate nursing students will receive $3,800; and nursing education students will receive $5,000. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. Students can reapply each year. The amount can vary based on funding each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,400.

Applications are available on the Alabama Board of Nursing website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a certification of admission to graduate study signed by the school of nursing's dean or associate dean; contact information for two character references; answers to the six questions listed on the application; and two documents evidencing Alabama residency for the year immediately preceding application (i.e., copy of drivers license, real estate mortgage, lease agreement, car insurance policy, homeowners insurance policy, voter registration card, Alabama income tax return, tag receipt, utility bill, etc.). The proofs of residency must be dated prior to July 1, 2017, and must contain the applicant's name and an Alabama physical address (items with post office boxes for the address are NOT acceptable as proofs of residency). The completed application and all supporting materials must be submitted online on or before the deadline date.
