Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be Latino.
  3. Must be currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of an undergraduate program OR the first or second year of a graduate program.
  4. Must intend to work as a practicing professional planner in the non-profit, public, or private sector.
  5. Must be enrolled in a planning program accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB). A list of PAB-accredited programs is available online at www.planningaccreditationboard.org/index.php?id=30.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to Latino students who intend to work as a practicing professional planner in the non-profit, public or private sector. Students must be enrolled in the third or fourth year of a PAB-accredited undergraduate planning program or the first or second year of a PAB-accredited graduate planning program.

Application requirements for the APA Latinos and Planning Division Scholarship are:

  • Personal statement
  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript or Accept. Letter
  • Resume
  • Interview (if req.)
Additional Information: The purpose of this program is to foster increased interest in the study of urban planning within the Latino student population at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. The division's Executive Committee will review applications and determine award winners. Applications will be judged using the following criteria, listed in order of importance: the significance of the applicant's personal and background statement; the content in the letter of recommendation; and academic achievement and/or service or impacts made in the Latino community or the planning profession. As part of the selection process and at the sole option of the Executive Committee, the top applicants may be required to participate in a telephone interview with members of the committee. The award will be announced on March 30.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in February for a refreshed application deadline date. Application information is available online on the American Planning Association (APA) Latinos and Planning (LAP) Division website. To apply, the student must submit the following materials: a one- to two-page personal and background statement written by the student, describing his/her interest in a career in planning and describing what impact he/she wants to make on planning in Latino communities; one letter of recommendation from a professor, a community leader, or current or past employer in support of his/her application and personal background statement; an official transcript of his/her current course of study (for current students) or a copy of his/her acceptance letter (for incoming students); and a resume of work experience and background. All application documents should be combined into a single file and emailed to the address listed by the deadline date. An email verification of application receipt will be sent to the participant by the LAP Scholarship coordinator.
