Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Arkansas.
  3. Must graduate from an Arkansas high school or receive a GED equivalent from the state of Arkansas.
  4. Must plan to attend an Arkansas college or university.
  5. Must a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
  6. Must plan to enroll full time.
  7. Must successfully complete the Smart Core curriculum established by the Arkansas Department of Education and have an ACT composite score of 19 or higher (or the equivalent).

Description: This award is available for Arkansas high school seniors who are planning to attend a two-year or four-year postsecondary institution in Arkansas. Students must successfully complete the Smart Core curriculum established by the Arkansas Department of Education and have an ACT (or ACT equivalent) score of 19 or higher.

Additional Information: The Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship (ACS) program provides scholarships to Arkansas residents pursuing a higher education. Eligibility requirements for the Academic Challenge Scholarship are based on three student categories: Traditional (Incoming Freshman), Current Achievers (current college students) and Nontraditional Students. For complete program information visit the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) website. The Arkansas Department of Higher Education will notify each eligible applicant of his/her award. The award notice includes the student's name, address, social security number, the actual amount the student is eligible to receive, and the student's first institutional choice as indicated on the application form. The award notice also explains the Arkansas Department of Higher Education’s disbursement procedures and conditions of the Academic Challenge Scholarship.

Award Amount: $1,000-$5,000  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) website. To access the application, students must first register for an account using the Arkansas Universal Financial Aid application System. Students must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application deadline is July 1 annually.
