Number of Awards & Eligibility: Generally, three to five awards are offered annually. Last year, there were eight awards given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a resident of Connecticut or New York City OR be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Connecticut or a New York City institution.
  4. Must be a high school junior, high school senior, any person entering an undergraduate degree program in the fall after the application deadline or the following spring, or a student in the first year of an undergraduate degree program.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen who are either residents of Connecticut or New York City or enrolled or planning to enroll in a Connecticut or New York City institution are eligible for this award. Students must have come up with creative solutions to problems faced by their schools, communities, or families, or who have solved artistic, scientific or technical problems in distinctive ways.

Additional Information: Selection of recipients is not based on financial need. After the scholarship recipients are selected, the amount of each award is determined solely on the basis of financial need. The Selection Committee will select the applicants who show the most promise as innovative, creative problem solvers, on the basis of their essays, letters of recommendation, and other information included with the application. Academic and extracurricular information play an important secondary role in helping the committee get a fuller picture of the applicant, but these are not the basis on which the scholarship is awarded. The Selection Committee reserves the right to decide, on a case-by-case basis, to contact applicants for phone interviews or to request additional materials. Applicants will be notified by mail whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $5,000 annually, renewable for three additional years. The award amount is based on the financial need of the recipient.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.

Applications are available online from the Renee B. Fisher Foundation (RBFF) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a copy of his/her letter of acceptance or waitlist status, unless he/she is a current college student; a main essay of 800 words or less addressing how he/she solved a scientific, artistic, or technical problem or a problem within his/her school, community, or family in a new, unusual way; additional materials to demonstrate the project/activities described in the main essay, if desired (eight copies required); a short essay of 400 words or less describing his/her plans and goals; a list of his/her extracurricular activities, including employment, school and community activities, sports, hobbies, projects, special family responsibilities, etc.; sealed, current transcripts from each college or high school he/she has attended in the last two years; a copy of his/her parents' and his/her own (if applicable) IRS 1040 form; and two letters of recommendation (forms available in application), at least one of which should be from a teacher, counselor, adviser, or principal if possible. All applications and supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date. Transcripts and letters of recommendation may be sent separately, but also be postmarked by the deadline date.
