Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 16 new scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have had a break in education of two or more years either after completing high school or during postsecondary studies.
  3. Must be a female.
  4. Must be 20 years of age or older.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 'C' or higher (if currently enrolled in college).
  6. Must be admitted to or currently enrolled in an accredited Delaware college in a two- or four-year degree program at the undergraduate level.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  8. Must have a high school diploma or GED at time of application.
  9. Must be a resident of Delaware OR have been employed in Delaware for 12 or more months.

Description: This award is available for Delaware female undergraduate students who have had a break in education of two or more years either after completing high school or during postsecondary studies. Students must be 20 years of age or older, have a grade point average of 'C' or higher (if currently enrolled in college), and be admitted to or currently enrolled in an accredited Delaware college in a two- or four-year degree program at the undergraduate level.

Additional Information: The Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation, Inc., is the charitable arm of Wilmington Women in Business, Inc. (WWB). Wilmington Women in Business established the Fresh Start Scholarship Program in 1996 to provide financial incentive and mentoring assistance to women returning to school to improve their lives and opportunities. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, disability, or national origin. The applicant must demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be available for a brief telephone interview if selected as a finalist. The applicant must be recommended by a social service agency (or, if a social service agency is not available, by a college/university representative). The recommender must certify the applicant's financial need and personal challenges. All applicants will be notified on or before July 31.

Award Amount: The amount of the awards will be determined annually prior to the fall semester but will in no event exceed the costs of tuition, fees, books and other direct educational expenses. Awards will be paid to the college prior to the beginning of each semester.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,188.

Applications are available on the Wilmington Women In Business, Inc. website. In addition to a completed application, the student must also submit the following: financial data from her most recent tax return; a signature of consent; a recommendation from a social service agency or college/university representative; an official copy of a high school transcript or GED certificate or, if applicable, a copy of official college transcripts; and a personal statement addressing the questions listed on the application. The completed application must be postmarked or submitted online by the deadline.
