Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, five awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a male.
  3. Must be homosexual.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be a resident of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, OR plan on attending an accredited college, graduate, and/or professional school in one of the counties.
  6. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to openly gay men from the five-county metropolitan Philadelphia region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia counties) studying anywhere in the U.S., or openly gay men from anywhere in the U.S. who are studying in the five-county metropolitan Philadelphia region.

Additional Information: The Lax Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 by the late entrepreneur and inventor Jonathan R. Lax for the purpose of encouraging gay men to obtain additional education, aspire to positions in which they contribute to society, be open about their sexual preference, and act as role models for other gay men with similar potential.

Award Amount: Up to $10,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $50,000.

Students must apply online on the Bread and Roses Community Fund website. Before starting the online application, the applicant must create an ID and password. The personal ID will allow the applicant to access his application and check on the status of his application. Please note: In order to complete the online application, the applicant must have a valid email address. As part of the online application, the student must submit the following: a financial narrative statement of 150 words or less that describes his financial need; a personal statement of 1,000 words or less that comments on the goals of the scholarship and how he expects to meet them; contact information for three references who will be providing reference letters on his behalf (one academic, one community, and one personal); and the name(s) of the institution(s) that will be sending official transcripts. The online application must be completed and all supporting documents (transcripts and letters of reference) must be received by 5 p.m. EST on the deadline date.
