Number of Awards & Eligibility: Scholarships may be awarded to a maximum of 300 eighth grade students in the content areas of reading and mathematics and to a maximum of 300 tenth grade students in the content areas of reading and mathematics. Approximately half of the awards in each grade level will go to students on the free and reduced lunch program. Please note: The actual number of awards given each year may vary. In 2013, there were 287 scholarships awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Delaware.
  4. Must be in eighth or tenth grade.
  5. Must attend a Delaware middle or high school.
  6. Must earn a high score on the Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS) in reading and/or mathematics.

Description: This scholarship is automatically awarded to Delaware eighth and tenth grade students who achieve high scores in reading and/or mathematics on the Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS) spring administration. Students may receive scholarships in more than one content area and may receive scholarships in both their eighth and tenth grade years.

Application requirements for the Michael C. Ferguson Achievement Awards Scholarship are:

  • DCAS score (automatic consideration)
Additional Information: The Michael C. Ferguson Achievement Award is named in honor of the former Deputy Superintendent and Acting Superintendent of the State Department of Public Instruction (now Department of Education) and former State Budget Director. Students may receive a scholarship in more than one content area (i.e., reading and mathematics) and may also receive scholarships for their eighth and their tenth grade scores. The Michael C. Ferguson Scholarship Award can only be used at a regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary institution or at a Delaware or other state-approved private business and trade school in the United States of America and its territories. Funds deposited for scholarships through the Michael C. Ferguson Achievement Awards shall cease to be available to the recipient if the recipient does not attend a postsecondary institution within five calendar years after graduating from high school. Provided further that a recipient may have one additional year of availability of the funds for each year the recipient serves as an active duty member of the military.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
